About your Instructors, Heidi Williams and Mark Hamilton-Smith
Heidi Williams (TCAAMT)
The moment Heidi was introduced to Buddhism and meditation in 2011 it was like someone turned the lights on in the room. Life made sense. She pursued learning and developing her meditation practice in the midst of a busy life with a young family for a number of years, learning from local teachers and mentors, going to retreats when possible, and seeking inspiration further afield, with teachers such as Thich Nhat Hanh and Pema Chödrön.
As life unfolded Heidi’s practice developed, and on retreat in 2020 she was looking to find a teacher, and was given Mingyur Rinpoche’s name.
Heidi found Mingyur Rinpoche’s way of teaching and communicating to be not only incredibly clear and accessible, but also transformative. Not merely something you do for 30 minutes on the cushion, but a part of life.
Since that time Heidi has studied and practiced under Mingyur Rinpoche and is a Practice Leader and Board member of Tergar Australia.
Meditation and understanding her mind better has had a hugely positive impact on Heidi’s life, and has motivated her to share this with others.
Heidi completed the yearlong Tergar Meditation Teacher Program in 2025, and is a Tergar Certified Anytime Anywhere Meditation Teacher. In addition, Heidi has completed the Meditation Teacher Training with the Broadplace’s Jacqui Lewis as well as a 70-hour Pranayama (breathwork) Teacher Training.
Heidi offers both in person and online Anytime Anywhere Meditation workshops, as well as other meditation and breath work classes.
Heidi lives close to the sea on the Mornington Peninsula and is in her happy place connecting with the natural world: in the water, the beach or surrounded by trees.
Mark Hamilton-Smith (TCAAMT)
Mark first began practicing meditation in his early twenties as a martial arts student. During this time, he was also immersed in post-graduate university studies in the History of Ideas. He found himself drawn to the overarching ideas that have profoundly impacted humankind, for better or worse. Buddhism and early Taoist writings captured Mark’s attention as some of the most remarkable collections of thoughts ever developed.
In addition to his fascination with eastern philosophies, Mark was an avid student of world literature, delving into the works of great literary masters, whom he would come to regard in hindsight as his teachers. His journey of self-discovery and enlightenment was to be complemented by over four decades of ongoing meditation practice—and over twenty years of practicing yoga.
However, Mark eventually realised his skills in meditation were incomplete without the foundational teachings of the Dharma and the support of a Sangha. This realisation led him to the Tergar meditation community, where he found precious learning opportunities and guidance. The community, accessible for both beginners and experienced meditators, offered a caring environment where Mark could connect with people locally and from around the world.
Mingyur Rinpoche’s teachings became a source of invaluable wisdom for Mark. He felt fortunate to receive expositions on Buddhist principles and thoughts, particularly those rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, enriching his spiritual and intellectual journey.
During 2025, Mark completed the yearlong Tergar Meditation Teacher Program (MTP) to become a Tergar Certified Anytime Anywhere Meditation Teacher. Prior to embarking on the Program, he had been teaching meditation privately and in organisational settings for many years. Alongside individual and group sessions, Mark currently teaches meditation to elite sporting groups, wellness centres, community organisations, and government bodies and corporate settings—tailoring each session to the people in the room. In addition to his meditation teacher skills, in his professional career, Mark is also an experienced corporate presenter, having facilitated training around ‘Effective Professional Writing’ and ‘Freedom of Information Awareness’ for public and private sector clients.
What Mark finds most meaningful about his teacher meditation training is the understanding that our true nature is already whole and complete. There is nothing broken that needs fixing. Through meditation Mark believes we are not trying to become someone different—we are learning to recognise what is already there and to rest in this discovery. This shift in perspective quietly transforms how you experience your life and relate to others.
Mark lives close to the beach in the Bayside area of Melbourne and is often found, whether over Summer or Winter months, swimming in the waters of Port Phillip Bay.
